Breakfast Biscuits
Ingredients
2 cups self-rising flour
( if u want to use all purpose flour SHIFT together 2 cups all purposr flour +1 tbs baking powder + 1/4 tsp baking soda + 1/2 tsp salt )
¼ cup shortening
1 cup milk or buttermilk
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
.
Put the flour in a bowl. With a pastry cutter or your fingers rub the shortening into the flour until the texture is like cornmeal.
.
Form a hole or well in the middle of the flour mixture and pour the milk or buttermilk into the well.
Use your fork to stir the flour into the milk, stirring in a circle so that a little more flour is incorporated with each pass.
Roll out dough to ½ inch and cut with a 2 inch cutter
optional : I applied egg white mixed with 1 tbs water on top of each biscuit to get the color
Place biscuits onto a greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

ReplyDeleteThats nice dear.........good entry.
ReplyDeleteHere we call them "scones". It is an English thing, I think. Biscuits to us are the flat sweet things - maybe you call them cookies. I am always fascinated by different food terms around the world.
ReplyDeleteWe grew up on these - usually for afternoon tea with strawberry jam and whipped cream. YUM. Adding sultanas to the mixture is also very very good.
For savoury scones, we would add a bit of cheese to the mixture, and sprinkle some on top which would melt and brown during cooking. These could be eaten with soup.
I would sometimes make them for Sunday breakfast or brunch but it was more unusual for us to eat them at that time.
The best thing is that they are so simple to make, I would often whip up a batch when visitors arrived, and surprise them 15 minutes later with hot scones from the oven.
Thanks for posting and bringing back all of those memories.
Looks tempting. Reminds me of the 'Naan Khatai' I used to have in the bakery as a kid.
